The gentleman from New York attacked Iran to get what President Obama already had. Instead, he expended munitions unnecessarily and raised the price of oil—and no new agreement is at hand to guarantee a nuclear-free Iran. But he has alienated the Allies.
On July 4, 1962, President Kennedy spoke at Independence Hall in Philadelphia, the city of brotherly love.
“...(T)he United States will be ready for a Declaration of Interdependence.... Acting on our own, by ourselves, we cannot establish justice throughout the world; we cannot insure its domestic tranquility, or provide for its common defense, or promote its general welfare, or secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity. But joined with other free nations, we can do all this and more.”
Although the Strait of Hormuz is closed, a window has been opened. The time is now to enact a windfall profits tax to support the transition to clean energy. That would create jobs, provide climate relief, and reduce the risk of involvement in Middle East wars.
The Declaration of Interdependence is a light to guide our next steps. The United States must negotiate an executive agreement on coordination between NATO, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and South Korea to create another Marshall Plan—the Allied Clean Energy States or ACES. That would make sanctions more effective and OPEC a memory, to be replaced by OCEC—the Organization of Clean Energy Countries. To seal the deal, Article V of the North Atlantic Treaty—an attack on one is an attack on all—must extend to members of the Grand Alliance. Then, together, they can offer assistance to other cooperative nations that aspire to be free.
The ship of state has a navigation system. The destination is known—to “secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity.” (Preamble) While an ordinary compass is marked North-East-South-West, the true heading of the USS Great Republic is set by the Preamble—a star chart for course corrections—to find fair winds and following seas.
